Theres been so much hype in recent months about the next revision of the android operating system (Honeycomb 3.0) and its specific use for tablet devices, I myself have been caught up in the excitement of the Motorola Xoom being rooted and overclocked, but does that mean I should go and get one right away?
I don't think so, but then again most of the people I know on twitter will know why and call me a hypocrite for saying so. Currently there is a dell streak and an iPad in the household the dell streak is mine and the iPad was won by my wife in a competition just before Christmas, the Pad is a really nice piece of kit its just the whole apple thing attached to it [put excellently by Charlie Brooker here: That sinking feeling]
Since the iPad's 'magical' arrival it has been touted a a life changing experience Jason Bradbury from The Gadget Show commented saying that it has revolutionised the way we do things, as opposed to how we did things before??
The real stir has been caused by the Motarola Xoom which is the only real contender up against the iPad but he cost of it is more expensive than the priciest iPad model
I have several twitter friends that are weighing up their options with regard to getting a new piece of [tablet shaped] kit, one of which being the Advent Vega a £250 which comes with quite basic options but is quite nice once rooted with the android market on it.
In my mind this technology is still in its infancy and we will start seeing the really good stuff over the coming months, I will just have to keep myself entertained with my dell streak for the next 12 months or so.
It's the right time to buy an iPad 2 ;) /troll
ReplyDeleteNice article man, I totally agree and will be waiting for the android tablet to mature.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the gadget geek in me wants a full tablet, I've been burned too many times before. Had the first HP Pocket PC, the second Gen of HP Pocket PC and the Toshiba 850 which we're fun but served naff all purpose.
I've been using my dell streak for the 6 months, mini tablet, sat navigation, Gmail, mp3 player, video player and of course my mobile (in a Dom Joly styley), and I've no plans to change especially when using the Streakdroid ROMS. (thanks to DJ Steve)
Totally agree the iPad has changed the Market and despite the naysayers it is yet to be beaten on price/spec. The android tablet Market will hopefully mature reasonably well without the fragmentation which is plaguing the android phone Market and causing a few to look at more stable options. The tablet which intrigues me most us the forthcoming BB Playbook? But agree that this Market for me will not be an option for another 12 months once it has stabilised a little after the makers have gotten over the emperors new clothes attitudes. One thing to note the iPad was a product without a desire, need or place and a year on it has virtually destroyed the netbook Market.
ReplyDelete@martyfarty diversity [or as you call it,fragmentation] is good :)
ReplyDeleteAnd apple did what apple do best take an already existing product and make it slick and trendy with their humongous marketing budgets and reinvent the wheel [and make you pay through the nose for it also].
It's a great product I play on my wifes one now and then and its a lovely, but it hasn't revolutionised the way we do things or changed our lives - its just another piece media kit.
